How do I scan an elongated object that does not fit into a single X-ray exposure when using Cone Beam CT?

vorteX is a computed tomography technique that provides some of the benefits of Fan Beam CT without the long scan times. vorteX CT allows you to scan elongated objects that cannot fit into a single exposure, thus enabling larger fields of view or higher magnification with increased resolution. vorteX simplifies spiral CT acquisition by rotating the test object and either moving the product vertically between the tube and detector or moving the detector and X-ray source vertically until the entire length of the object has been scanned. The simplified design also allows for the technology to be implemented in relatively compact designs, such as the X5000, X50 and the X25.

A parts field of view has been traditionally limited by the size of the X-ray detector. The most commonly used detectors range from 5x5” (13cmx13cm) to 16x16” (41cmx41cm). vorteX scanning stretches the scanning envelope from the size of the detector to the vertical length of travel allowed within the system. Using vortex, one can often scan an object whose length is multiple times that of the detector size. Additionally, when performing geometric magnification of smaller diameter, long parts, one can generate increased magnification throughout the entire length of the product.

The other major benefit of vorteX is the elimination of cone beam artifacts, which are usually seen at the top and bottom of conventional CT scans that use short focal distances or wide cone angles. Cone beam artifacts on flat, horizontal surfaces throughout the part are also eliminated without having to tilt the part during acquisition.
